2017 summer wedding trend tips

Fabienne Egger, Monday, 26th March, 2017
I’ve done my fair share of weddings over the years in Surrey, London and other parts of the UK and Europe, and at the beginning of each year I enjoy looking at what is predicted to be the year aheads floral wedding trends. With summer fast approaching here are my top tips for summer weddings…
Wildflowers were once unthinkable but are now one of the top wedding flower trends. Created mainly from seasonal flowers and staples like olive branches, eucalyptus and ferns, wildflower arrangements are rustic and utterly charming – perfect for the boho wedding which is simple and in tune with nature.

Whilst some brides like to push the style boundary, there will always be a desire for traditional and classic bridal bouquets such as the posy or round bouquet. The posy is a hand held looser bouquet with mixed seasonal flowers and very easy to hold. Round bouquets are formed into perfect domes, often using a single type of flower like roses or peonies. Round bouquets are often monochromatic, although they look just as beautiful featuring flowers in a variety of colours.

The most popular flowers are still Hydrangeas, Peonies, Roses and Dahlias. Blush continues to be one of the most requested colour choices, but mixed with deep shades of burgundy or Fuchsia, orange and rust. The use of branches, leaves and vines has been growing steadily, and this is expected to explode in 2017. My top two top picks are passion flowers and jasmine.

Tall glass trumpet vases are making a comeback. Sitting above guests' heads they allow for large, lush arrangements. In contrast, there is a renaissance of linear, more tailored centrepieces, as opposed to the loose, fresh picked style that’s been popular in recent years. These structured arrangements fall in line with the trend towards a more classic wedding look overall.

Garlands are more likely to be seen during the Christmas period, but can now be seen across all seasons. Usually placed on long rectangle tables, which are a new trend in themselves, or as a car decoration, they are easy to decorate. Garlands can be made with Ivy, Ferns or Jasmine and need a lot of foliage. Flowers used to decorate the garland should enhance the wedding colour theme to tie it all into place.

And finally, my favourite are hanging flowers and chandeliers, also known as canopies or installations. They look absolutely gorgeous and really stand out. Many designs for the chandeliers are simplistic yet have an undeniable WOW factor, some are covered in foliage with plenty of green on show whereas others have long stemmed pretty pastel coloured flowers hanging down. It’s a statement piece for any wedding.
